“Let it be still, and it will gradually become clear.” -Lao Tzu
With the election just days away, many in public health, non-profits, and community work feel the weight of uncertainty. Strategic planning often takes a front seat as winter nears, but with potential shifts in policies and funding, how can we effectively plan ahead?
In these times, we’ve found some guidelines that help navigate uncertain waters:
- Acknowledge Ambiguity: Recognize the uncertainty. Accept what’s unknown, decide where decisions are possible, and pause where they are not.
- Extend Grace: Times of transition can feel overwhelming. Give yourself and others grace; acknowledging difficulty helps sustain morale.
- Reach Out: Connection combats isolation. Touch base with those who offer support and perspective—it’s invaluable for both resilience and insight.
- Reaffirm Your Purpose: Reflect on your mission. Aligning with your core purpose helps keep planning on track, even if that path is temporarily adjusted.
- Take Action, However Small: Physical movement, fresh air, or completing small tasks can help restore clarity and focus. When in doubt, keep moving, even in small steps.
- Watch the Bigger System: Stay alert to changes in your environment. Observing feedback and shifts within your network can offer clues to inform your next steps.
